Today is World Water Day and we are thankful for the clean, reliable, and affordable water that flows from our taps and for the sanitation systems that keep us safe from water-borne disease. Elsewhere, in the developing world, the picture is quite different. According to a new report by UNICEF, 39% of the world’s population lacks access to safe sanitation, and 13% lack access to safe drinking water. Together, these problems claim over 2 million lives, the vast majority of them children. While UNICEF tells us progress is being made, the cost in human life is staggering. In addition, the time and resources it takes to find and transport clean water keeps many villagers in poverty. The good news is that it’s easy to be part of the solution, and its not expensive. In fact, it costs only $30 to provide one person with a lifetime of clean safe water. Our partner, the Blue Planet Run Foundation offers many ways to get involved, from raising awareness online, helping to raise funds or donating yourself. We hope you will consider taking action and telling your friends to get involved.
